Theory of Mind and Cognitive Distortions: Correcting Thought Errors

The thinking errors that maintain Theory of Mind and CBT techniques for correcting them.

Cognitive distortions — systematic errors in thinking — are both symptoms and drivers of theory of mind. Identifying and correcting them is core to CBT.

Common Cognitive Distortions in Theory of Mind

All-or-nothing thinking: 'I failed once, therefore I always fail' — common in theory of mind

Catastrophizing: Expecting the worst-case outcome for theory of mind-related situations

Mind reading: Assuming others are judging you negatively

Fortune telling: Predicting negative theory of mind-related outcomes as facts

Emotional reasoning: 'I feel like I'm failing, therefore I am' — theory of mind emotions mistaken for evidence

Should statements: Rigid rules about how you or others must behave that create theory of mind when violated

Correcting Cognitive Distortions in Theory of Mind

The CBT process: identify the distorted thought → examine the evidence → generate a more balanced alternative → notice the effect on theory of mind.

With practice, cognitive restructuring becomes automatic and theory of mind loses much of its staying power.
