Projection is the process of displacing one’s feelings onto a different person, animal, or object. The term is most commonly used to describe defensive projection—attributing one’s own unacceptable urges to another. For example, if someone continuously bullies and ridicules a peer about his insecurities, the bully might be projecting his own struggle with self-esteem onto the other person.
How Projection Erodes Self-Worth
Projection frequently attacks the foundation of how we see ourselves. The relationship between projection and self-worth is often deeply entangled.
Common ways projection damages self-worth:
- Negative core beliefs: "Projection means I'm broken/weak/unlovable"
- Comparison thinking: measuring yourself against others who don't struggle
- Internalized shame: believing projection is your fault
- Achievement avoidance: not trying to avoid confirming negative beliefs
- People-pleasing: seeking external validation to compensate
Separating Identity from Projection
One of the most powerful shifts in recovering self-worth while managing projection is learning to separate who you are from what you experience:
